Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Sara began her dance training at the Peabody Preparatory under the direction of Carol Bartlett and Barbara Weisberger, founder of the Pennsylvania Ballet. At Peabody, she was a dedicated student of both classical ballet and contemporary dance. She studied in the select Arts for Talented Youth program and received multiple scholarships and awards, including the Sara Glassman Scholarship, support from the Wendy Robinson Memorial Fund, the Peabody Dance Scholarship, and the Performance Award in Dance. Sara spent her summers studying at renowned summer intensive programs at The Washington Ballet, American Ballet Theater, The School of American Ballet, and Ballet Austin.
Upon her graduation in 2005, Sara was accepted into Ballet Austin’s Professional Trainee Program. In 2006, after just one season in the trainee program, Sara was promoted to Ballet Austin’s Second Company. During Sara’s two seasons with Ballet Austin, she performed works by Stephen Mills, Thang Dao, Thaddeus Davis, Gina Patterson, and Michelle Thompson.
In 2007, Sara became a founding member of New York-based contemporary company Wideman/Davis Dance under the direction of Thaddeus Davis and Tanya Wideman-Davis. Both in New York and on tour, Sara performed principle roles in Davis’ Based on Images, Woman, Rock and my Soul, Elida and Twenty Rising, and the Boskett Affair.
In 2009, Sara took a hiatus from her dancing career and enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin as a student in the Psychology Special Honors Program. Beginning 2011, while at the University of Texas, Sara studied ballet under the guidance of Professors David Justin and Grace Holmes. She performed works with Mr. Justin’s company American Repertory Ensemble and Austin’s Austin Metamorphosis Dance Ensemble under the direction of Melanie S. Kregel and Latisha Coffey. In 2012, Sara spent a summer studying at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, directed by Summer Lee Rhatigan. She was one of 30 dancers selected to participate in workshops focusing on Forsythe technique and Ohad Naharin’s Gaga technique. At the Conservatory, Sara also performed works by Robert Moses, Ohad Naharin, Alex Ketley, Alessio Silvestrin, and Bobbi Jene Smith.
Sara graduated Cum Laude Ampla et Magna, Phi Beta Kappa, and with Special Honors in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in December 2012. She has since performed alongside principle dancers from Donald Byrd’s Spectrum Dance Theater in Vincent Michael Lopez’s premier work Grace, In Arms Length for Seattle’s Chop Shop Dance Festival in February 2013, and performed in new works by Magdalena Jarkowiec. Sara also returned to Wideman/Davis Dance as a principal artist in 2013.Sara has also continued to pursue her career in teaching ballet. She currently teaches students of all ages at Ballet Austin and is an adjunct instructor at the University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Theatre and Dance. She can been seen teaching and performing all around Austin, TX.
